Sierra Leone is a country in western africa with a population of around 6 million people. Tough political and economical conditions have been, for many years, the main obstacles to development, but in recent years the country has experienced a stage of reconstruction, after the civil war ended in 2002.

This nation was born as a result of freed slave decidein to settle in the area, therefore it is little surprise that the country's capital is called Freetown. It soon became a British colony, but was finally liberated and gained its independence in 1961.

Sierra Leone is one of the poorest countries in the world and has been for many years been embroiled in civil war for decades, so luxury holiday resorts and hotels are non-existant. What can be found are wild beaches on its 250 miles of coastline, perfect for surfing and windsurfing, and beautiful holiday islands such as Banana Island and Turtle Islands, both excellent diving locations.

Most of the country's holiday accommodations are situated in the capital Freetown, although recent development has started to ehlp build holiday accommodation on the coastline. Those who venture to this mysterious african nation will find unspoilt beaches, stunning nature reserves and excellent diving spots, all set within a wild environment which is thriving in its new-found liberty.
